When they need to come out
Signs a wisdom tooth is causing trouble
The classic one is a dull ache way in the back of your mouth that keeps coming back. Add a swollen flap of gum over a half-erupted tooth, a stiff jaw, or a bad taste that brushing won't fix, and it's time for an X-ray. A wisdom tooth growing in sideways can also quietly damage the healthy molar next to it long before anything hurts.
Not every problem announces itself, either. Plenty of the wisdom teeth we remove were spotted on a routine checkup X-ray before a single symptom. Taking them out early, while the roots are still short, usually means an easier extraction and a faster recovery. That's why we watch them at every teenager's cleaning as their family dentist.
Also: back-of-the-mouth pain isn't always a wisdom tooth. Sometimes the culprit is a cracked or decayed molar next door, and the fix is a regular tooth extraction or a repair instead. The X-ray settles it in about a minute.
And if your face is swelling or the pain is severe right now, don't wait for a routine slot. If you have a dental emergency, we can often treat you the same day depending on the complexity of the problem. See our emergency dentistry page, or just call.
