Tooth Extractions in Rock Hill
Why Would You Need a Tooth Extracted?
Dr. Areheart may recommend tooth extraction for a variety of reasons. Some teeth are extracted due to severe decay, advanced periodontal disease, or broken teeth that can’t be repaired. Teeth may need to be extracted due to poor positioning in the mouth (impacted teeth) or to prepare for orthodontic treatment.
What alternatives exist to extractions?
A single tooth extraction can cause problems with chewing, jaw joint issues, and shifting teeth, all of which can negatively impact your dental health. To avoid these complications, Dr. Areheart can discuss alternatives to extractions as well as tooth replacement. A root canal or a crown may save a tooth.
How is a Tooth Extracted?
During extraction, we will numb your tooth, jawbone, and gums with a local anesthetic. You will feel a lot of pressure but not pain during the extraction. It’s from firmly rocking the tooth to widen the socket for removal.
The anesthetic has numbed the nerves, stopping the transmission of pain, but not the nerves that transmit pressure. If you experience any pain during the extraction, please notify us immediately.
After removing the tooth, the dentist will clean out the socket with saline solution. The dentist will decide to then stitch the gums together to close the extraction site if necessary.
What if I'm terrified of the dentist?
We understand that lots of patients have had bad experiences in the past or are terrified of the dentist. We offer IV sedation at our office and can talk you through the procedure to ease your nerves and explain all that is being done.
